Thank you WoCA Volunteers!

Dearest Volunteers,

National Volunteer Week is from 16-22 May and the theme for this year is "Better Together" -  "Volunteering brings people together; it builds communities and creates a better society for everyone. Together, through Volunteering, we are changing communities for the better. We are, Better Together."

On behalf of the WoCA Board, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for showing up.  Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your love. You are what makes this organisation feel like home.

As we near our second birthday, August 17th 2022! We thought I’d share some of the milestones we’ve achieved together.

  • Secured our first major contract with the Victorian Government (Office for Women, Department of Families, Fairness & Housing). They are funding the co-design of our pilot Executive Leadership Program. More information here .
  • Partnered with the Australian Human Rights Commission to deliver our first Community Consultation. We engaged with the team tasked with undertaking consultations to progress the National Anti-Racism Framework. More information here. Chin Tan, AHRC’s Race Discrimination Commissioner delivered his opening remarks and recognised WoCA’s work within the space. You can watch it here .
  • Commenced development work for our pilot mentorship program. Details to be shared very soon!

We may be a young organisation but we have done some pretty awesome things in such a short period of time. We are proud of us. And we are proud of you. Thank you to everyone that's part of our community.

With much love and gratitude,

Brenda & the WoCA Team

We exist to champion Australia’s Women of Colour.

ORIGIN OF THE PHRASE "WOMEN OF COLOR"

"Women of Color is not a biological designation. It is a solidarity definition. A commitment to work in collaboration with other oppressed women of color who have been minoritized. It is a term that has a lot of power." Loretta Ross

We acknowledge the Wallumattagal clan of the Darug nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which Women of Colour Australia is situated. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women with whom we stand in solidarity. We acknowledge that as settlers on this stolen Aboriginal land, we are beneficiaries of the dispossession, genocide, and ongoing colonial violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We believe that it is our collective responsibility to help dismantle the structural inequities and systemic barriers oppressing the original inhabitants of this land. We are also painfully aware that the land was taken forcibly, without a Treaty or reparations made. We have taken a practical step towards honouring sovereignty by paying the rent – and we invite you to do so too. This land is and always will be Aboriginal land. Sovereignty was never ceded.
